Stars and Stripes Honor Flight Homecoming {Gigi’s Joy Photography}

A couple of weeks ago I attended the November 1st Stars and Stripes Honor Flight Homecoming at Mitchell Airport in Milwaukee. The Stars and Stripes Honor Flight is an organization that coordinates complimentary flights to Washington D.C. for WWII and Korean War veterans to visit the memorials.

My uncle was on this flight, so I brought my two oldest children to the Homecoming. Just walking in to the airport and seeing the line of folks with their flags and signs gave me chills. What a beautiful way to pay tribute.

The crowd was filled with signage to keep you occupied as folks waited for the plane to arrive. Many of the veteran’s families had their own reunions.  Other spectators were there because they’ve attended in the past and came to show support once again.

The atmosphere was that of gathering for a parade, but the anticipation was far greater.

It was so emotional to watch the faces of the veterans as they came in. It was such a special experience for me, so I can hardly imagine what the veterans were feeling as they came through the line. It’s something I want to take my children back to experience again.

The official Honor Flight shirts have the quote below. It’s pretty perfect.

We can’t all be heroes. Some of us get to stand at the curb and clap as they go by.” -Will Rogers

  1. I’ve always wanted to go to the Appleton airport when an Old Glory honour flight comes in. I think I would be a proud, blubbering mess! What did the kids think?

    • Honestly, they were pretty tired :). It was a LOT of waiting, without many places to sit. I really wanted them to experience it now, but I’d like to go again when they are older. I think that taking a group of teenagers to one of these would be great fun!

  2. I went to Beloit to welcome my grandpa, and 199 other WWII and Korean War veterans, home a few years ago. He went on a trip through Vets Roll (VetsRoll.org). It is similar to Honor Flight, but is a 4 day bus trip, all expenses paid. The welcome home was AMAZING, complete with a parade and fireworks. People lined up, shaking hands with the veterans and thanking them for their service. Talk about chills! I keep going back for the welcome home celebration every May. Amazing!

    • Wow – that does sound fantastic!
      I think what made this special too (like the Beloit homecoming) is that you’re there for the sole purpose of honoring the vets. In a 4th of July parade, folks could be there for lots of different reasons – but for these things, you’re going there for one reason, and one reason only – and the energy is so different when you’re standing there in the crowd.
