Shoreland Lutheran High School hosted A Night to Shine Prom, sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation on Friday night, February 12. Though I have worked with the special needs community for many years now, this was the first special needs prom that I’ve attended – and it was fantastic.

I can’t even imagine how many hours went into preparing for the event – and all of the volunteers that have worked tirelessly behind the scenes.

Last minute instructions were given and reviewed.

When guests arrived, they greeted old friends…

and quickly made new ones –

and said goodbye to parents for the night.

After coats were hung, guests were led into a room where they could have their hair and make-up touched up.

And in some cases, completely re-done once they saw the possibilities!

Some little friends came along for the fun, too. (See below)

There was a shoe-polishing station where the men were treated royally,

and service dogs waited patiently.

A quick stop in the hall for a sweet sisters picture….

Each guest was able to pick a flower for the evening.

And had help putting it on.

Then it was time for the official pictures. Photographers volunteered their time to take formal images and print them that night so guest could take them home.

The red carpet was rolled out for all, with paparazzi on each side. Guest were announced by name, along with their request of cheering and clapping, or silent waving.

Much consideration was given to ensure that each guest had a great time.

This included making sure that there were options for special dietary needs, as well as a Sensory Room for those that needed a break throughout the night.

I loved seeing the wheels mixed in with all of the feet on the dance floor.

And a special shout-out to the girls who kept those wheels moving all night!

When it was time for a break from dancing, there were places for folks to sit and visit…

or you could head to the karaoke room and pour over the song choices.

This one put on quite the show.

to a packed house.

After a while, it was back to the dance floor for some…

while others took a spin on the party bus.

It was one of those evenings where you see so much promise and good in the world. The guests were so gracious and polite – and the students who worked with them were exceptional.

It was truly magical.
Thank you to the hundreds of people who each did their part to make it happen.
